Juneteenth, which occurs each year on June 19th, is a day that that celebrates the end of the enslavement of African-American people in the United States.
In 1865, on June 19th, the Emancipation Proclamation, which had been issued on January 1st, 1863, was finally read to the last of the enslaved African–Americans who were living in Galveston, Texas. Congress had passed the 13th amendment several months before.
Consequently, Juneteenth is also known as Freedom Day.
In 2011, Juneteenth was formally recognized as an Alabama holiday by the Alabama Legislature. Celebrations in Birmingham all support community unity and ancestral heritage. Several celebratory events are being held in Birmingham this year. Here are the ones we found.
