At Birmingham on the Cheap, we’re always looking for ways to help you live your best life on a budget. This can mean scouting out great shopping deals, food specials, or finding free and cheap things to do around our area.
This particular event will take a bit of drive-time depending on where you are, (approximately 45 minutes) but it’s free, it’s summertime, and we live in beautiful Alabama! Join Southeastern Outings for a FREE floating trip down the Locust Fork River!
On Saturday, June 13, Southeastern Outings is advertising and “easy river float” from Taylor’s Ford through Cornelius Falls and below. Come float, swim, and picnic in this beautiful part of Blount County.
Supervised children from 8 years and up are welcome! Parents are responsible for all risks to children. All participants must be able to swim.

Besides being home to the spectacular Cornelius Falls, this uninhabited stretch of river also boasts high rock bluffs and sheer cliffs that rise high above the river for fantastic viewing as you relax in your float.
Participants are asked to bring something to float on such as an inflatable vinyl float or an air mattress.
Please note this statement by Southeastern Outings: “Spring floats, passenger car/truck tire tubes, and inflatable boats are NOT permitted on SEO river float trips. A spring float is a flotation device consisting of an inflatable outer oval with a large interior mesh. These are meant for swimming pools and aren’t safe.
What to bring:
- picnic lunch
- towel
- sunscreen
- drinking water
- wear a bathing suit
- wear sturdy shoes you don’t mind getting wet and dirty such as sneakers. Flip flops and bare feet aren’t acceptable.
How to pack:
Pack all your items including lunch, towel, drinks, and sunscreen in TWO plastic garbage bags, one bag over the other. Tie them with twist ties and put them in a pack that you’ll be able to strap to your back. The purpose of packing this way is to keep everything dry and to keep them from floating away.
Where to meet:
No pre-registration is necessary for this trip. Bring some friends and meet at the Cleveland Chevron at 9:45 AM. This is approximately a 45-minute drive from the Birmingham area. Departure is planned for 10:00 AM
