Not everything we consider waste should go directly into our normal, household trash can. Instead, take them to the Jefferson County Hazardous Waste Day this Saturday, April 24, to ensure the safety of your family.
STOP!
Dispose of Hazardous Waste Properly!
Wastes including paint, batteries, and household appliances, for example, must be properly treated before they are disposed of. The Land Disposal Restrictions program (LDR) ensures just that.
Created by the U.S. Congress in 1984, the LDR first treats hazardous waste to make it less harmful to groundwater. This reduces the potential for leaching and waste toxicity by destroying or removing harmful particles.
Thankfully, Jefferson County has set up free, hazardous waste events around Birmingham to assist the public with this issue. Jefferson County’s Household Hazardous Waste Collection Day will take place on Saturday, April 24, 2021, from 8:00 a.m. until 11:30 a.m., or until capacity to accept waste has been met.
This event is free and open to all residents of Jefferson County Alabama. You must bring proof of residency (valid photo ID with address or state-issued driver’s license). BUSINESSES ARE NOT ALLOWED TO THIS EVENT.
Please look around your home for these items that may be old or no longer in use:
- Ammunition
- Appliances
- Batteries
- Electronics
- Household Cooking Oil and GreasePaint
- Paper Shredding (2 box limit)
- Yard and household chemicals (pesticides, herbicides, fertilizers, bleach, etc)
- Prescription drugs
- Tires
Now, gather those items up and visit the event location nearest you to dispose of them.
