Get your entire family shaking their groove thing with these great dance lesson deals, some with February-only specials, so get moving! Below, we spotlight three Birmingham-area dance companies making a way for everyone to have a chance to get up and dance.
The Dance Foundation
This Homewood-based dance studio offers a range of classes for students beginning with preschool-aged children. From tap to ballet, parents have a variety of class choices that will fit their dancer’s fancy.
But what we love most about this studio is its amazing Community Partnership Program, which partners with a variety of companies and organizations to sponsor students from the surrounding community who otherwise would not have access to develop their dance skills.
With this program, students who apply, and are accepted, are able to train free of charge, thanks to the generous donations and grants of partners from across Birmingham and the state of Alabama. The Community Partnership Program focuses on four key areas: Dance for Children in Pre-K, Children with Special Needs, English Language Learners and Language Arts Enrichment, and Children Who Live with Challenging Circumstances.
Families who would like to apply for a scholarship must register online and also complete the Tuition Assistance application here in order to be considered for assistance. For additional information and specific program details, please visit The Dance Foundation online here, or contact them at The Dance Foundation, 1715 27th Court South, Birmingham, AL 35209, or call 205-870-0073.

Beverly’s Dance Unlimited
What we love most about Beverly’s Dance is how family-oriented the staff and teachers are. Since 1954, this family-owned and operated company has been training young dancers to first, just love dance, and then go as far as they desire to go. This makes their win of the 2018 “Birmingham Parents” Best Dance Studio award most deserving.
With locations in Clay and Leeds, families can train at the studio closest to them. And yes, we said “families!” Beverly’s offers classes for children and adults! And, during the month of February, Beverly is offering four months of classes for the price of three! Who couldn’t use this great discount to keep their tootsies tapping to the beat?
At Beverly’s, students can choose from ballet, tap, combo classes, and clogging, to jazz/contemporary, and hip-hop dance. Students can even audition for competitive dance teams and travel with the company to compete throughout the year and perform at events. The staff keeps the process pretty seamless and simple for parents (whew!). With a host of family members making magic happen behind the scenes, this leaves behind a warm and fuzzy dance experience for everyone involved!

If you’ve seen the astounding 2020 Brown Sugar Nutcracker: The Magic City Experience, you already know you’re in for a sweet treat! Under the direction of the talented and energetic Ursula Smith, the students of Ursula Smith Dance can expect a self-confidence-building experience as they are revived and guided to pound out their passions through cultural dance.
While many theatres were still planning a viable pivot, Ursula Smith Dance led the way and moved its sold-out Brown Sugar Nutcracker experience into an online, virtual production during the 2020 holiday. Performers, young and old, created an astonishingly colorful and passionate production, and now, it’s giving back to the city.
During the month of February, Ursula Smith Dance presents RISE: Rhythm Inside Experience, which will provide FREE virtual dance classes the company notes is “designed to cultivate creativity and to celebrate not only African-American heritage but rhythm and movement from across the African diaspora.”
